Measurements and Benchmarking of Experiments
Session chair: Jerker Wilander
Jointly organized by members of the FIRE facility projects CREW, OneLab2 and BonFIRE.
Scope: In the context of FIRE experimental infrastructures, we define benchmarking as the act of measuring and evaluating networking protocols, devices and networks, under reference conditions, relative to a reference evaluation. The goal of the benchmarking process is to enable fair comparison between different networking solutions, or between subsequent developments of a system under test. Measuring and benchmarking of wired and wireless networking solutions as well as computer systems and applications is put forward as a research topic in several research projects such as CREW, OneLab2 and BonFIRE. This session will first give an overview on general 'measurements and benchmarking' concepts, followed by 3 presentations with very concrete results on how 'measurements and benchmarking' is applied during experimentation in a few specific research areas. This session provides sufficient time for discussion, where we aim to pinpoint the demands for the FIRE facilities and the corresponding tools that should be provided.
- Introduction to measurements and benchmarking - Presenter: Stefan Bouckaert (IBBT, Belgium) - 30 minutes
- Measurements and benchmarking in wired networks: examples - Presenter: Carsten Schmoll (Fraunhofer, Germany) - 20 minutes
- Measurements and benchmarking in wireless networks: examples - Presenter: Walid Dabbous (INRIA, France) - 20 minutes
